Description: |
A lovely gray limestone carving of the robust guardian figure dressed in full armor, the breast plate with a fierce looking relief monster face carved below the belt strap under the circular breasts with snake head rearing between. Though fragmentary the superb carving holds strength, in the swaying torso and the intense stare with bulging eyes (to see all), crows feet at corners, broad nose thick lips surmounted by an upturned moustache and a small goatee beneath. The remnants of hair suggest that it was tied in a top knot. Losses and chips. Custom mounted.
This figure was compared to a well known Tang marble torso of a tianwang, a heavenly king, in the provincial museum of Xian, which was exhibited in China. 5000 Years. Innovation and Transformation in the Arts, Guggenheim Museum, NYC, 1998, #167. |
