Description: |
Large gray slate slab having a very nicely preserved fish fossil. The Devonian period began 416 million years ago. Fish reached substantial diversity during this time, leading the Devonian to be often dubbed the Age of Fish. The Late Devonian extinction started about 375 million years ago and severely affected marine life, killing off all placoderms (fish), brachiopods (shells), trilobites (arthropods) and reef-building organisms. The cause of the extinction is unclear, but leading theories include changes in sea level and ocean anoxia, possibly triggered by global cooling or oceanic volcanism. It seems to have affected only marine life. Slab repaired from approximately five original pieces. Wall hanger affixed to the back for display. |
