Description: |
Ceramic pubic cover for a female native of the Island of Marajo at the mouth of the Amazon. These triangular avian forms were suspended by fiber tie cords sewn through the three corner holes and worn on ceremonial occasions. The clay is formed and slip-painted prior to firing, with finely painted dense images on the face of the cover. These likely would have been the sole coverings, outside of elaborate body painting, that a woman of the Marajo culture would have owned. Buff pottery with cream ground and finely painted pattern of steps, crosshachures and geometric shapes. Perforated at the tips for suspension. Restoration to the three tips, else intact. Custom metal mount. |
