Collected in the Green River Formation, Lincoln County, Wyoming. Resting on a slab of
cream-colored shale background a (Bechleja rostrata) freshwater palaemorid prawn (measuring 3.7 inches) with clearly visible eye and several appendages. The Green River Formation, in Utah and Wyoming, is one of the most important fossil sites for understanding the Eocene epoch that began about 55 million years ago. The fossils, especially plants, found at this site indicate that the climate was moist temperate or sub-tropical. In addition to the plants, another piece of evidence suggesting that the climate was sub-tropical is the presence of fossilized crocodiles, which can survive only in areas with a constant warm temperature. If one were able to visit the Green River region during the Eocene, there would be palms, cattails and sycamores. A series of large inland lakes extended across the region and it is in the bottoms of these lakes that various plants and animals were buried and fossilized. The lakes later dried up as the climate changed and many of the plants and animals living there became extinct. Outer slab repaired from pieces, with break lines and losses visible, not affecting the crustacean. |
