Description: |
Carved slab type standing figure of greenstone with traces of cinnabar. Reminiscent of Olmec figures, especially in the forehead deformation, almond shape eyes and the fleshy, open trapezoidal mouth. The blocky abstract body with cuts separating the arms from the legs are Mezcala traits. The size and form of the figure indicate it was carved from a celt. This is a classic example of Olmec figures from Guerrero. A similar figure was published by Emile Deletaille in rediscovered Masterpieces of Mesoamerica, 1985, pg. 195, fig. 299., as a masterpiece of Olmecoid sculpture from Guerrero. Intact, exc. cond. Custom metal base. |
