Description: Carved speckled black-green stone standing figure with highly abstracted hands held together over his chest and deep skin folds between the cheeks and nose. This is a hybrid figure in which the thick lipped trapezoidal mouth, flanged ears and strong aquiline nose are Olmec features. The pecked circular eyes, large hands and blocky feet are more associated with Mezcala and Chontal. The size and shape of the figure indicate that it was carved from a celt. Carlo Gay published a similar figure in Chontal: Ancient Stone Sculpture From Guerrero, Mexico, 2001, fig. 162., and referred to it as Chontal-Olmec in style. It is more naturalistic than Mezcala figures. Intact, exc. cond. Custom bronze base.
Provenance: Private NYC collection, acquired from Fine Arts of Ancient Lands, New York, 1991. Ex. Kelly Rollings Collection, Tucson.
Shipping Fee:
National: $24.00
International: $75.00 (This is approximate and for Postal Service. Prices may vary, especially for private carriers such as: FEDEX, UPS and BAX).
