Description: |
Very large carved black serpentine stone mask depicting a human face. Elegantly sculpted idealized facial features, having a broad nose, recessed eyes which once held insets, arched eye lids and browline, wide mouth with parted lips exhibiting upper and lower teeth, as if suggesting speech. Four sets of biconical drilled attachment holes along the outer edges, two in his temples and one in the top center edge. Both the mouth and nostrils are open to the reverse interior of the mask. Overall strong scattered mineral deposits and root marks. Several scattered ancient divot marks on the surface and high point wear, and a few scattered very minor ancient edge chips or losses, otherwise intact. Custom lucite base. A very impressive example. |

From the collection of Brian Mahony, NYC. and Redding, CT. Active 1980 - 1990’s. Acquired from Fine Arts of Ancient Lands, NYC., 1986. |
