Description: A lot of three wheel-thrown terracotta pedestal bowls produced by the Narino culture of highland southwestern Colombia, each sharing the distinctive hourglass silhouette, bold negative resist decoration, and commanding presence characteristic of this tradition at its finest. Each vessel presents a wide, flaring bowl set upon a tall conical pedestal foot, the form elegant in its proportions and consistent across the group despite individual variation in decorative emphasis. The exterior surfaces are painted in a warm red slip over which negative resist designs in dark brown-to-black create a dynamic visual field of interlocking diagonal bands, nested diamonds, zigzag registers, and eye-shaped motifs that wrap the bowl walls in restless, energetic patterns. The negative resist technique, achieved by applying a resist material before firing to preserve the ground color beneath, produces the characteristic soft-edged, slightly irregular quality of line that distinguishes hand-applied wax or clay resist from painted work. A row of fine incised notching runs along the exterior rim of each bowl, a refinement detail that recurs consistently across Narino pedestal wares. The interiors are uniformly dark and undecorated. *This lot will not be on view at the New York exhibition, and will ship from Colorado*
