Lot# & Name: 159. Quimbaya Seated Male Pottery Figure with Gold Nose Ring
Estimate: $1,600-$2,400
Current High Bid: $850.00
Auction Closed(Final Price) $850.00

Category: Pre-Columbian Art
Sub Category: Colombia (Non metal)
Culture or Country: Colombia.
Period: Ca. 1200 - 1250 A.D.
Size: 6"W. x 8-1/2"H.

Description: A hand-built pottery slab figure, seated on a broad posterior with tubular limbs, one arm bent and hand raised as if holding a vessel with a circular hole in the hand for attachment of such a vessel. The large, rectangular head features a simple yet stylized visage with sizable slit-form eyes, a protruding nose with a pierced septum, and a straight, narrow mouth. A high-quality, heavy gold ornament, crafted from an 71% gold, 13% copper and 13% silver alloy, adorns the septum. This ornament likely dates to the same period and likely to be original to the figure. Pierced holes running through the torso and head suggest the presence of additional attachments that have long since disintegrated. Slab figures like this were commonly placed in shaft and chamber tombs as burial offerings, possibly serving as guardians or companions for the deceased. Stable pressure crack just above right thigh. Numerous manganese blooms across the surface attesting to the authenticity of the piece. *This lot will not be on view at the New York exhibition, and will ship from Colorado*
Provenance: Private New York collection; ex. The Lands Beyond, New York.
