Lot# & Name: 480. Ptolemaic-Roman Egyptian Bronze Harpocrates
Estimate: $1,200-$1,800
Current High Bid: $0.00
Auction Closed(Final Price) $0.00

Category: Antiquities
Sub Category: Egypt - Roman-Egypt
Culture or Country: North Africa, Egypt.
Period: Ptolemaic to Roman period, ca. 200 B.C. - 200 A.D.
Size: 1"W. x 2.9"H. x 1"D.

Description: A cast leaded-bronze figure of Harpocrates, the youthful form of Horus the child, standing nude with the left leg advanced. One hand is raised toward the mouth, the finger-to-lips gesture associated with the god's iconography, a motif understood in antiquity as a sign of infancy, and later reinterpreted, incorrectly, as a gesture for silence. The head carries the plaited sidelock of youth falling along one shoulder, a marker of divine childhood in Egyptian iconography. The surface carries a mottled green and earthen patina consistent with burial. Bronzes of this type were kept in household shrines or carried as protective amulets, associated with the child god's role in healing, fertility, and protection. Loss to suspension loop on verso. Weathering and abrasions to surface commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with liberal remaining detail and rich patina. *This lot will not be on view at the New York exhibition, and will ship from Colorado*
Provenance: Ex. David Zahler collection, acquired February 10, 2006, via New York gallery; ex. private West Coast, collection, acquired in the 1970’s.
Shipping Fee:
National: $51.00
International: $105.00 (This is approximate and for Postal Service. Prices may vary, especially for private carriers such as: FEDEX, UPS and BAX).
